I am
Bianka Reese, from
Durham, North Carolina and a freshman at the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. I plan
to major in Health Policy and Management in the
top-ranked School of Public Health in the
nation. I also plan to minor in Social and
Economic Justice. My favorite experience has
been attending the football and basketball games
at UNC-Chapel Hill. We are known for our
excellent sports teams and being a part of the
celebratory and prideful atmosphere has been an
amazing experience. I love singing all of the
chants, including our Fight Song that says “I’m
Tarheel born and I’m Tarheel bred”.
All the games are extremely fun, especially when
we win, which is a majority of the time.
Currently, at UNC-Chapel Hill, I am a member of
an organization called Gold-N-Love which stands
for Gentlemen of Leadership and Distinction and
Ladies of Virtue and Excellence. We are an
on-campus minority service organization whose
purpose and goals are to educate our campus and
local community about various issues that are
prevalent in our society, aid our community
through public service, develop leadership
skills in our disciples, and help eliminate
negative stereotypes about underrepresented
youth through our mentoring program. In high
school, I was extremely dedicated to Track and
Field, and was a captain on my team for 3 years.
I enjoyed this experience very much and it taught me great
leadership skills, like patience, organization and
cooperation, which will aid me in my future endeavors.

In the future, I would love to manage a
county health department or small community clinic. I would
effectively manage the health system resources, including
human, financial, and health information by assuming
leadership roles in the current complex health care
environment. It is amazing that small community health
departments offer free or inexpensive healthcare to the
public and I would love to be a part of it, determining
policies and leading it in the right direction so that it
can adequately and efficiently serve the public. I am
enormously honored to be the first recipient of the Marshall
Brent Dixon Academic Excellence Scholarship. I worked very
hard in high school to earn top-notch grades, and I am
exhilarated that it has paid off and allowed me to honor
Brother Dixon’s memory in this way. I hope I make him proud
by reaching my top potential, serving the community, and
becoming a significant and giving member of society. |
